NSW - 2007 National Photography Prize: Getting fictitious
Photography as Theatre is the theme for this year’s biennial National
Photography Prize held at one of the country’s key centres for excellence
and innovation in contemporary Australian photography, Albury Regional Art
Gallery. This year for the first time the Gallery is offering a new major
acquisitive prize of $10,000 in addition to the existing $11,500 total
prize money. The theme - also a new introduction for 2007 - seeks to
highlight work that explores photography as construct: the creation of
fictitious images to tell a story or express an idea, as opposed to
objective reportage, documentary or freeze-framed ‘real’ images or the
candid moment. The opening will be followed by a day of activity and
discussion at the Photography Symposium on 2 June.
