Here is some of my process work for my interface project..
Drawing about sound, sound about drawing 2009

This project explores relationships between individual acts of improvisation.
What is improvisation and how does it work? This project examines, through the relationship between vocal sound creation and pen based mark making, where improvised ideas come from.

A drawing and a piece of sound are created based upon the ongoing progress of work made to one another. Each line, or note, depends on what has gone before it. Sound is created while looking at the drawing and drawing is made while listening to the sound, each influencing the other and in turn influencing themselves.

By showing two different mediums of work which have been built, each on the basis of what has previously been made in the other, gives the viewer a chance to conceptualise the work in the same way that it was produced.

This diagram shows that the viewer will be positioned in-between the two forms, surrounded by the sound (played through headphones) and with freedom to examine the drawing, though influenced by the input of the sound. The view of the drawing will then influence the interpretation of the sound.
I am considering this work an interface because the viewer must decide to put on the headphones to properly view the work. This is the main decision for the viewer to make, the action of deciding to become involved in the work, giving them the privilege of interpretation.
My main concern with the work is that, at present, the sound is too linear. There is a clear beginning and a clear end. If this stays like this then a new interactive element may have to be added. The viewer would have a button to press which would begin the sound piece from the start. I am unclear whether or not if the sound is put on a continuous loop it will detract from the experience.

[…] I’ll be using this animation as visual inspiration for a sound performance I’ll be dropping on Thursday night. This should give some insight into the process that I’ve been using with my Drawing about sound, sound about drawing work. […]
